About Muncie, IN - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Muncie, Indiana was first settled in the 1770s by the Lenape people who had been relocated from their original home in the Mid-Atlantic region. The town takes its name from a Lenape word meaning a tribe member or referring to one of their languages. The Native Americans were forced to leave the area and head further west in 1818, and the land opened up to European settlers in 1820. From the late 19th century onwards, Muncie's economy was firmly rooted in manufacturing, but this began to collapse, along with that of the rest of the Rust Belt, in the 1970s. Today healthcare and education are more important to the local economy, with the city's two largest employers being Ball State University and Ball Memorial Hospital. In 2007, a study by the real estate company Coldwell Banker found Muncie to be the nation's most affordable college town.
Muncie has a number of cultural organizations including the Muncie Ballet, Muncie Symphony Orchestra, David Owsley Museum of Art and Minnetrista Cultural Center. Major annual events include the Delaware County Fair, held each July when the weather is warm and somewhat humid, and the Holiday Handcrafters Showcase and Marketplace, held in mid-November when things are starting to cool off quite a bit in anticipation of the long winter chill.
