About Elwood, IN - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Elwood, Indiana is a small city in central Indiana which calls itself the Heart of Hoosierland. It was laid out in 1853 around the site of a store that had been built along the banks of Duck Creek, and the town originally went by the name of Quincy. The first railway came through in 1857, the community welcomed its first child in 1858, and in 1869 it adopted its current name of Elwood after the son of one of the town fathers. In 1873 Elwood was incorporated as a town, but by 1891it had grown to such an extent it re-incorporated as a city. From the late 1800s through the early 20th century Elwood boomed as a center of the industry due to the discovery of a local source of natural gas, but when the gas ran out, it was discovered that the local soil was particularly conducive to growing tomatoes.
The tomato growing and canning industry is still important in Elwood today, and the Red Gold company sponsors one of Elwood's largest annual events, the Red Gold Chili Cook-Off each October. In addition to chili, this event also features baked goods, crafts and live entertainment.
Elwood's other main annual celebration, the Glass Festival each August, also highlights local industry. Tours of the two local art glass businesses, Prestige Art Glass and the House of Glass, are featured as part of the festivities, along with a parade, carnival rides and an antique car show. Both of these festivals typically enjoy mild, pleasant weather, as summer temperatures in Elwood tend to stay in the mid-80s and temperatures in the 60s linger through the month of October. Winters can be long and cold, but Elwood marks the beginning of spring with its Home, Health and Garden Show in late March.
